How to measure your opening
Always measure the structural opening — never the existing door panel. A garage door is built larger than the hole it covers, so measuring the door itself is the single most common cause of a door that will not fit.
Replacing an existing door
- Width: measure across the finished opening from the inside face of one side jamb to the inside face of the other.
- Height: measure from the garage floor straight up to the underside of the header at the top of the opening.
New build or rough framing
- Measure the framed rough opening: jamb to jamb for width, and from the finished floor level to the bottom of the header for height.
- Exclude any trim, stop moulding or weather seal — those sit outside the opening.
Also check the surrounding space
- Headroom: at least 12 in between the top of the opening and the ceiling for a standard lift, or 15 in for a low-headroom track.
- Sideroom: at least 3¾ in of clear wall on each side of the opening for the vertical track.
- Backroom: the door height plus 18 in of clear depth into the garage.
Take each measurement in three places — left, centre and right for width, and both sides plus the middle for height — then use the smallest figure. Openings are rarely perfectly square. Record everything in feet and inches to the nearest ¼ in.
